Marrakesh and the interior of Morocco can become stiflingly hot in summer, easily exceeding 40°C (104°F). Fronting the desert, these plains are also subject to springtime sandstorms (usually in April) when wind (known as the sirocco, chergui or irifi) travelling at speeds of up to 10km/h picks up the fine sand and dust and whisks it across the plains. Even in winter, the lowlands can be hot during the day, with the mercury hitting 30°C (86°F), but temperatures drop quickly in the evening.
