Getting there

The Eurolines office (09 220 90 24; Koningin Elisabethlaan 73) is 100m from St Pietersstation. Buses leave from this office. Ghent has two train stations. The main one, St Pietersstation (09 241 22 44), is a distinct, fortress-like affair about 2km (1.2mi) south of the city centre. Some trains also stop at Gent-Dampoort to the east of the city.

There are trains every half-hour to Antwerp (45min), Bruges (20min), Brussels (45min) and Ostend (50min), as well as frequent connections to Oudenaarde (35min) and Ypres (1hr).

Getting around

The city's public transport network is operated by De Lijn (09 210 93 11). Its information kiosk next to the train station sells bus and tram tickets and has free transport maps. Trams to the centre of town (Nos 1, 10, 11, 12 and 13) depart from the tram station in the tunnel to the right as you exit the train station. A recent initiative is a network of free nightbuses, which operate on Friday and Saturday nights. Once again, De Lijn's kiosk has a pamphlet showing the six colour-coded nightbus routes. Bikes can be rented at the train station or in the town centre.
