I liked being in Rabat and think the best place to stay in is the medina due to the cheapness of the hotels and the convenience. At the medina Hotel Maghreb, the manager claimed I lost the key and charged me 15 dirham (about 2USD) to change the lock. He lied, but I was sick from the filthy food handling practices for about 3 days and just paid. I left and found other hotels that were better though. I met a so called student who claimed he just wanted to talk to an American and really Imadi was a hustler. He wasnt the only one I met. I hated the shocking ways ppl are allowed to put their germy ungloved hands on food items and even eat from the trays. Merchants are out to rip you off as they are thru out Morocco. I wanted to buy some rock salt the size of a mans fist, but I wasnt sure if it was salt, so Imadi picked it up, LICKED it, confirmed it was salt, then put it back in the bin for it to be sold. He asked me if I wanted it and I said no, yuk! In Taroundant, I wanted to buy some black salt and the merchant lifted a bin, pulled out a huge chunk of black salt that was actually sitting on the ground to support the bin(muck like a rock would) and offered to sell it to me. I refused and told my Moroccan friend that rodents probably had pissed and crawled all over it since it was sitting on the dirt ground. He translated and the man offered a piece that he claimed had not been on the ground. I also refused. Seeing the potters on the road to Sale is the best thing to do in my view. They somehow transform old car tires into potters wheels that they kick with their feet. It is ingenious if not strange and fascinating. I also loved the huge walk in kilns. Fantastic! Marjan, the huge supermarket chain is also way cool and food itmes are much cleaner than the souks with fixed prices.
