Beautiful city however be warned of the overpricing

five stars

I have been to Marrakech on 2 separate occassions and on both visits i really enjoyed being there. In fact I would describe it as a eye opening experience. Both of my visits were memorable, however the only thing that spoilt my trip was being ripped off in the cafes etc. In particular all travellers should be wary of going into the MOBARKA RESTAURANT/GLACIER, there is a waiter who works there called Ali who inflates all the prices by as much as 60%. This is something they do regularly as I witnessed many other tourists arguing with the waiting staff. Apart from this Marrakech is wonderful some of the people are very sweet. Just do not trust everybody you meet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a cultural delight

five stars

It was a wonderful place the Souk was a maze of wonderful sights and smells. If you love haggeling and want bargins this is the place. It was busy and you have to beware of the snake charmers and men with monkeys who will ask you for money if you take a photo. The views of the atlas mountains are amazing. Would I go back yes and would recomend it for a short weekend break. Food fantastic, culture magnificent

Trekking in High Atlas

five stars

The High Atlas Mountains run SW through Morocco. They are remote, barren and absolutely stunning. Our challenge is to climb Mt Toubkal (4167m), the highest mountain in North Africa. The route is tough in places with steep rocky climbs and our challenge is made tougher due to the effects of being at altitude; however the reward of magnificent views from the summit and our sense of achievement more than compensates! The route also takes us through colourful Berber villages. The villagers farm in the river valleys and herd their goats and sheep in the mountains. We also have time to explore the ancient and bustling city of Marrakech, The High Atlas Mountains run SW through Morocco. They are remote, barren and absolutely stunning. Morocco rocks!

five stars

I was in Marakesh in Feb 05 to March 05 and it was a like a sensory overload type experience. I stayed at the Hotel Ichbilia that is right near the square on one of Djemmas main arteries. This is the best area to stay in or you can find a nice and cheap hotel right in the square itself. I used the Lonely Planet guide as a reference. This is a nice area for restaurants, shopping, hotels and getting a taxi to the airport. I liked the shopping in the medina and the fact that you can navigate it on your own without a guide. I did not like the trained Barbary apes in Dejemma and the tourists who paid for pictures. I also hated the aggressive entertainers in Djemma who told me to pay whatever I wanted for a picture, then became physically threatening if they felt I did not give enough. I cant tell you how many ppl I had to hit when they grabbed me. My travelmate even pulled a knife on a man in Fez. I also did not like the attitude of most of the merchants who think that you are just a sucker begging to be licked. For example, when I wanted to buy some jellabas, or traditional dresses they gave me outrageous prices of 9000 dirham etc, that is over 1000 USD. I was pissed because I have visited so many times and the real price is about 150 to 300 dirham; a huge difference. I couldnt believe what they were saying and asked them to write it for me and yep, there it was, an incredibly ridiculous price. There are many more examples of the merchants trying to charge 10 to 1000xs the price. I let them know I wasnt a fool. An excursion to Essaouria and the Ourika Valley are not to be missed. I loved the food in Djemma, esp food stall #25 with my friend Abdul. The calamari, harissa sauce, freshly baked bread, russet colored olives with that unique taste combination of salty and tangy, tender deep fried calamari, grilled liver brochettes with chunks of lamb fat to moisten and flavor, gently spiced lamb sausauge, huge chunks of fish, tagines and more! What an experience day or night. At night, the men clap their hands, shout greetings and get in your face to attract your attention. All that smoke rising from the many stalls, the natives clad in traditional robes, the women in veils, my wierd and witchy looking henna making friend who calls herself "Alfreda", those stealth motorcycles driven by the young who are in a hurry and even old women in their 70s carrying several ppl. Wow! Its too much and at the same time, you can never get enough.

When can I go back?!!

five stars

The City of Marakech is wonderful, but if you are interested in getting to see the local life it is best to travel outside the city. The Ourika Valley is spectacular and the people are amazing. Better learn some French before going (not much English spoken). The mountain villages are like nothing you have ever seen. The hospitality that we were given was unmatched.... Best to take a local guide if you want to wonder off the main roads and walk through the mountain villages. There are wonderful sites to see that the normal tourist misses by staying in the city. The textiles and pottery are inexpensive and they are willing to barter (in fact, they expect it). You can find some wonderful treasures unlike the tourists trinkets you will find in the city. The village markets are the place to go if you want to find jewelry and spices. The sellers in the City of Marakech are a bit pushy so be prepared to say "no thank you"...a lot! But the people are outstanding.
